As a young woman growing up in today's world, I have been conditioned to avoid going places alone, to always be aware of my surroundings, and to be careful talking to strangers. From personal experience, I can say that this cautionary advice is helpful and necessary but should not paralyze young women with fear about seeing and exploring the world.

Not only did I "survive" a year abroad at 18 years old as a young American student, but I thrived! Importantly, while I embraced the travel advice I had been given, I also learned how to travel safely alone and enjoy it!

Traveling alone as a woman can be incredibly freeing and empowering, and a true learning experience not just about the people, places and cultures you are being introduced to, but also about yourself.

Traveling alone affords you with the opportunity to stare at that painting you love for as long you want, to enter that restaurant you find intriguing when others may not, and to try as much of the local cuisine as many times as you desire during your journey, knowing full well that others would not do the same if they were with you. The possibilities are endless, and for you alone to decide. No compromise required.

While it is always important to be aware of your surroundings, many times you get the best advice from the locals, who may be strangers at first, but quickly turn into friends you never knew you needed. And on occasion these are even people who may become a part of your life's network through social media, or even ongoing friendships.

When traversing the world as a solo female traveler, one should include a visit to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. It is a great addition to the itinerary of adventurous women and can be safely accomplished utilizing one of Jordan’s many female-centric guided tours. For example, Intrepid’s “Jordan: Women's Expedition” is a guided tour of Jordan focused on the culture of Jordanian women. What a fabulous way to spend your vacation - learning about and bonding with our sisters in this part of the world. This eight-day adventure takes you around Jordan, experiencing the country and culture through the eyes of Jordanian women. You will learn about Jordanian culture, and explore and experience the wonders of this absolutely stunning country.

However, you don’t necessarily need to join a group tour when traveling alone, but it is always a good idea to make a plan ahead of time about the destinations you have in mind to see. That said, many times the best adventures are often the unexpected ones!

The possibilities are endless for the solo female traveler. It is up to you to decide. Just stay smart and safe and enjoy!
