Jordan is a land of dramatic landscapes—and some of its most breathtaking natural wonders are hidden in its canyons, valleys, and gorges. Known locally as “wadis” (an Arabic term for valley or riverbed), these formations are carved through sandstone and volcanic rock, revealing stunning waterfalls, narrow passages, and natural pools along the way, offering incredible hiking and canyoning experiences.

From leisurely hikes through scenic valleys to more challenging canyon descents with rappelling and swimming, there's a range of adventures to suit every level of experience and fitness, making them perfect outdoor activities during the warmer months in Jordan.

Here are some of Jordan’s most popular wadis:

Wadi Mujib

Admired for its spectacular waterfalls and piercing mountains, Wadi Mujib is a mountainous sandstone gorge that enters the Dead Sea at 1345 ft (410 m) below sea level, making it the lowest-altitude nature reserve in the world.

Wadi al Hassa

With rugged terrain and serene beauty, Wadi al Hassa is located in the area of the Great Rift Valley, and it is known for its canyons, colorful rock formations, and pools. It is one of the longest valleys in Jordan, with a length of 25 mi (40 km).

Wadi Hidan

Near the historic city of Madaba, Wadi Hidan is known for its abundance of natural water and various types of wildlife, offering wonderful opportunities for swimming and jumping through the canyons.

Wadi Hmaira

Only a one-hour drive from the capital city of Amman sits the highest waterfall in Jordan, surrounded by red cliffs and lush vegetation - certainly a must-visit spot during a trip to Jordan.
